Job Profile

The Director of Trauma Services (DTS) is responsible for the overall direction and daily operational activities of the Trauma Services Department including planning, budget, personnel, data collection and submission, quality improvement, coordinating clinical services, policy development and collaboration with physicians and administration to ensure high quality, patient centered services. The DTS assures compliance with the criteria for Trauma Center verification as established by the American College of Surgeons Committee on Trauma (ACSCOT). The director actively participates in and represents the Harris Health System at the Southeast Texas Regional Advisory Committee and on local, regional and state committees related to trauma care.

The DTS prepares and monitors the annual budget for the area/program to achieve effective financial performance. The director assures adequate staffing for the trauma services department and ensures personnel management is consistent with state and federal laws and organizational policy and procedure. The DTS leads and participates in quality improvement initiatives, ensures compliance with trauma program regulatory standards; maintains active involvement in regional and state trauma system development, and promotes a customer-friendly environment.

The DTS is responsible for creating and maintaining an environment that cultivates exemplary patient care. As a member of the nursing leadership team, this director establishes a setting that supports professional nursing practice and empowers nurses to provide safe, effective, compassionate, and efficient nursing care in collaboration with all health care disciplines. The DTS ensures compliance with standards established by professional nursing organizations; national, state, and local regulatory agencies; and institutional policies and procedures. The DTS is accountable for nursing practice that upholds high standards of integrity and ethical behavior. The DTS mentors others, role models professionalism, and participates in nursing organizations, nursing research, and activities within the community.


i. Graduation from an accredited School of Nursing with a Master's degree in Nursing or related field. Holds at least one (1) of the following in Nursing: Bachelors, Masters, or Doctoral degree.

i. Current Registered Nurse license from Texas Board of Nursing;
ii. Applicable professional certification in administration or clinical specialty (TCRN) is to be completed within two (2) years, if not held at the time of appointment;
iii. Trauma Coordinator course within one (1) year;
iv. Trauma Outcomes and Performance Improvement Course (TOPIC);
v. Association for the Advancement of Automotive Medicine (AAM);
vi. Basic Life Support from a hospital-based American Heart Association (AHA) approved program.
vii. TNCC and/or Advanced Trauma Care for Nurses, Instructor preferred; and
viii. PALS or Emergency Nurse Pediatric Course (ENPC)

Work Experience: Five (5) years of work experience in related clinical area of practice. Must have experience in a designated or certified Level I or Level II Trauma Center.

Management/Experience: Two (2) years related progressive management/leadership experience is required.
