JOB SUMMARY:

The Lactation Consultant demonstrates specialized knowledge and expertise in breastfeeding, management, and support of lactation. The LC provides competent services to mothers and families and performs a comprehensive maternal, child and feeding assessment related to lactation. The LC provides patient, family and staff breastfeeding education in collaboration with the Women's Services department nursing leadership for the specified Harris Health pavilion. The LC provides breastfeeding support to antepartum, intrapartum and postpartum patients who require breastfeeding support throughout the facility. The LC serves as a liaison/resource and promotes interdisciplinary/interdepartmental communication and collaboration. The LC participates in quality improvement and community activities as appropriate. The LC maintains an environment that cultivates exemplary patient care.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
1. Education/Licensure/Specialized Training:

a. Education:
i. High school diploma or equivalent
ii. Associate degree in Health, Nutrition, Education, or related field preferred.

b. Licensure/Certification:

i. Certification as an International Board Certified Lactation Consultant (IBCLC)- need registered trademark.

2. Work Experience:
i. Two (2) years of work experience in maternal/child health to include one year of experience in lactation consulting.

3. Management/Experience: N/A

4. Equipment Operated: Typical medical equipment related to job duties.

1. Communication Skills:
Above Average Verbal (Heavy Public Contact) 1
Bilingual Skills Preferred: Yes 1 - Language(s): Spanish
Writing /Composing: Correspondence / Reports

2. Other Skills: Medical Terms, PC, Word Proc 1

3. Advanced Education: Advance Training Specialty: Certification as IBCLC specified above

4. Work Schedule: Weekends, Holidays, Flexible, Travel, On Call

5. Other Requirements: BCLS and NRP required- can be scheduled and completed during orientation.
