Job Summary

The Financial Counselor performs the quality control function for Observation, Inpatient, and Outpatient Surgery accounts ensuring all pertinent information is available and accurately documented for timely and efficient billing. These activities include accurate validation of patient demographics, insurance verification, and determining all sources of funding available to the patient. Collect co-pays/deductibles and resolve outstanding financial issues for all patients prior to discharge. Screens patients to identify third party liability and will assist patients with completing related applications. Ensures all third party applications are routed to the appropriate location. Conducts thorough evaluation of documents required for Medicaid, Harris Health FAP, Crime Victims and assists with all qualified Medicaid applications.

Minimum Qualifications
Education/Specialized Training/Licensure: High School Diploma, or GED; Associates degree or 2 years of college preferred

Work Experience (Years and Area): Minimum 3 years of progressive customer service experience or 2 years of hospital patient accounting experience as a financial counselor, collector, registrar, or customer service related capacity preferred.

Equipment Operated: Must have PC skills, knowledge of computerized patient accounting/registration and eligibility systems, and facsimile operation, medifax, photocopier, FSS system

Special Requirements
Communication Skills: Above Average Verbal (Heavy Public Contract), Bilingual Skills Preferred, Writing /Composing (Correspondence /Reports)

Other Skills: Analytical, Mathematics, P.C., MS Word, MS Excel

Work Schedule: Weekends, Flexible

Other Requirements: Able to work efficiently with little supervision, handle stressful situations and have excellent customer service skills. Must be able to interact successfully in a culturally diverse environment. Ability to communicate effectively with patients, physicians, family member, and co-workers. Must be able to effectively multi-task.
